MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface
first introduced in 1983
not software or hardware, more a universal "digital language", means of communication for music technology, code language
instruments work with computers / each other
01011011 -> bytes (digital words) -> messages (note on/off, not number)
MIDI consists of performance infromation - like print music
MIDI is completely independent of audio - it is NOT sound
tells something else when and when not to use a sound
velocity measured 0 to 127
one keyboard functions as a controller, connected to another synthesizer
MIDI doesn't transmit audio sound
transmits info provided by the performer
what key is pressed and when, what pedals are pressed, etc

Midi Devices have three sockets
Midi In: recieves midi info
Midi out: transmits midi info
midi thru: repeats the same midi in signal

useing thru, more than one instrument can be controlled by a single midi output
Master instrument: instrument that sends info
Slave instrument: instrument that receives info

Midi interface: device used to connect midi to computer
translates midi data into a computer's own machine language

Midi OX - software emulator, allows you to connect multiple devices together through the computer itself
Data range for on/off messages between 0-127
Middle C is 60

Aftertouch - can detect a note being pressed harder after it is pressed

Most synths have two functions - performance mode and multi-timbre mode
Multi-timbre - more than one sound is being played
Performance mode plays one sound

General MIDI synthesizer: for every patch that a synth makes, it will be the same for every synth
First 8 are piano

Turning local control off
Disconnects an electronic keyboard from its internal sound generator
necessary when using a software or dedicated sequencer

16 MIDI channels, 10 is special
mutli-timbre instruments can play on many channels at once
10 is the universal percussion and drum channel

MIDI benefits: small file size
tempo and pitch are completely independent of each other
Find sections using measures and specific beats
performance and notation of a song (finale)

Sequencing: record midi data, plays back notes, a digital "piano player"
similar to a multitrack recorder
may also include digital audio recording
